The Art of Lavina Marie

My maternal grandmother is a creative old soul always seeking to express herself in one way or the other. It was her brilliant idea for us to make personalized stationery out of the scrapbook stuffs we have sitting around the house, gathering dust. At first, she thought of making simple all-purpose cards, but I thought maybe we could expand our craft to include other stationery items, since I've always wanted to try making notebooks, inspired by artpreneurs around the globe. I got to work immediately.

Finding an excellent how-to guide online, I gathered some index cards I had lying around, hunted for some thread, and proceeded to make a trial notebook. It's still pretty rough around the edges, since I lack basic materials (like a cutter and ruler to name a few) but I'm thrilled at the idea of making more, improved notebooks.

I might make my Flories into such notebooks, when I've mastered the craft. I'm so excited about this project, it's the first time my grandmother and I are doing anything like this! <3

It's done.

Bells That Toll Winter
Watercolor on paper

I was going to name it 'Winter is Coming' but I thought better of it; I might get sued for copyright infringement, haha! Anyway, I really do need more practice with watercolor. Especially in painting skin, the skin looks absolutely horrible here, among other things.

So, yesterday I bought myself a clear folder to store my small drawings and paintings in, but this is no ordinary clear folder (at least for me); it's a spiral one, which I have never come across until the other day when I first spotted it at Paperchase. It's about Dhs 49, or $13, with a black cloth-like cover, and about twenty or so thick display pockets. I love it so much!

There's a white version of the display book, but it's semi-transparent and softbound; I wanted the black one because its hardbound cover seemed more protective, and slightly more professional-looking too. Back in Manila all my drawings are scattered everywhere; it's about time I properly put them on protective display. When I was in high school I used to have gigantic clear folders for my works (which were all A3-sized then), only because it was necessary for my Art class. I used to produce so much work then (about three folders' worth); I wonder what changed, haha!

On another note, here's another painting I'm starting on, to be rendered in watercolors as well:

I can see why the artists I know or follow prefer watercolors; although they're not so easy to work it, they dry fast, so you finish your work faster. It can literally take me years to finish an acrylic painting; the watercolor painting above took me about two weeks, an hour to two each day, give or take. I have an idea for how the second painting's going to turn out, but let's see if I can capture it on paper.

With that, have a lovely day, everyone!

Yay, my flower fairy painting's done! That's one of many down, haha.  I actually lost interest in it for a while, because I wasn't sure if it was turning out okay, but anyway, here it is (I apologize for the slight haze; my camera didn't take this photo so well):

So, about two-three weeks ago, I came across another treasure in Booksale: a pretty box full of pretty stationery! For its sheer prettiness, and its insanely cheap price (it was marked at only 120 pesos; about 10 dirhams or 3 US dollars), I just had to buy it.

As an afterthought, I figured maybe it could inspire my art in some way, and it did, because I set to painting flowers as soon as I could. I realized that painting on paper allows for the vibrancy of the colors to show without the distraction of surface texture, which is normally the shortcoming of canvases. I can't blob color over color too much, though; the paper's much too thin for that. Anyway, this is what that flower painting looks like now:

It looks nowhere as pretty as the stationery, and I actually have no idea how this painting will turn out; I'm making up the composition as I go along (which isn't exactly the ideal way of painting for me, since I'm more calculated, but somehow this painting calls for spontaneity).
On a side note, I just finished the worst hell week of my life; hopefully things won't be so hectic in the upcoming days, so I can just work on my art without any danger of anxiety attacks. Also, I'm looking into local university websites for a possible Master's Degree in Fine Arts... I just hope I'm qualified for one!
